album a day: NRBQ – at yankee stadium

today’s album a day was nrbq – at yankee stadium.

nrbq stands for new rhythm and blues quartet.  they formed in the late 60s.   their music contains a vast array of influences.  at some points it sounds like pure rockabilly, then it’s out and out rhythm and blues.  then the next song is almost jazz.    perhaps it’s this wide ranging approach that cost them exposure, because they aren’t easy to pigeonhole and say ‘nrbq sounds like this‘, so public acceptance and radio play were hard to come by.

their live shows are legendary, however.    they are wild and fun and their music has an infectious quality that you can immediately pick up on.  there’s nothing to ‘get’ here – it’s self evident and fun.  it’s soulful and the musicanship is top notch.

below is a recording someone made of one of the lighter songs on the album, it comes to me naturally.  i like this recording because it sounds like it was recorded off vinyl or something.

you should poke around some nrbq sometime.
